Happy Holidays

I've never seen this movie, but I've had the soundtrack album for 30 or so years and love it. I'd totally forgotten about it until I saw a post on another website that referenced Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's awfully pretentious albeit incredibly successful "Lucky Man." In the holiday spirit, I offer you:

If you have a friend on whom you think you can rely,
you are a lucky man.
If you've found the reason to live on and not to die,
you are a lucky man.
Preachers and poets and scholars don't know it,
Temples and statues and steeples won't show it,
If you've got the secret just try not to blow it,
stay a lucky man.
If you've found the meaning of the truth in this old world,
you are a lucky man.
If knowledge hangs around your neck like pearls instead of chains,
you are a lucky man.
Takers and fakers and talkers won't tell you.
Teachers and preachers will just buy and sell you.
When no one can tempt you with heaven or hell,
you'll be a lucky man.

I have never even heard of this movie, much less seen it. But it also stars Helen Mirren. I like her.

You heard of the group MGMT? They put out that awesome "Time to Pretend" song a couple years back. They remind me an awful lot of a modern day EL&P.

At any rate, I hope the basement can do without you for one day so you can enjoy a wonderful holiday and a Merry Christmas with family and friends.

I've heard of MGMT and may even have seen them at Bonnaroo. I'd need to ask my offspring for verification. I listened to ELP a bit back in the mid-70s with the headphones plastered to my ears. "Brain Salad Surgery," although I liked their live album as well. Keith Emerson was a fine pianist, I guess, although his talents may have been largely misguided. I saw a YouTube thing with him and Oscar Peterson, and the former was clearly out of his league.

I do like the Nice, though -- the band he had before ELP. Great version of "America" from West Side Story. They apparently liked to whip each other on stage, and Emerson would do things like take an axe to his organ. Whatever floats one's boat, I s'pose.
